My childhood Lima HO train set was set up on unpainted chipboard with roads drawn in chalk (from school) and buildings crudely made from cardboard boxes with doors and windows drawn in with felt markers. In my imagination it was much better than it actually looked.
Seen here is the 1657 Australian Shunting Diesel and very out of focus in the foreground is the 3006 0-4-0 tender loco (US Alco in plain black, including wheels. Supposedly French according to the 1976 catalogue).
My dad took the photo shortly before we sold the layout and went N scale.
