The Nederlandse Spoorwegen 1200 was a remarkable electric locomotive. It had a distinctive "powerful american" look, which was kind of unique in European railways. The Lima Model had a very long history and received an update towards the end of its career. The Model of the 1200 was introduced in 1963. In my believe this model is the first one to use the famous "G-Motor", while other models of the same year still had the classic, I call it "pot-type motor", similar to Rivarossi motors of the same era. The G-Motor was a new motor design, which was also used with Fleischmann and Marklin trains of the same period.
The 1200 first appeared in blue with yellow stripe under the catalogue number 8024 (CL). The "CL" stands for "con luce" (italian for: with lights), it was used until approx. 1973. In the first year it still had the stamped sheet metal pantograph with single pick up, later it used the "Märklin-Type" with double pick up shoe. The Model itself was a rather good one. Compared to the competitors it was the only scale model of this locomotive. Fleischmann was too big (1:82) and Märklin wass terribly shortened which made the model look like a strange caricature of itself.
In 1973 the colour changed to the modern grey/yellow colour scheme of the Netherlands Railways, although the item number kept unchanged
The model was made for a very long time and even sold under the HEMA brand name for Dutch chain stores. In 1994 there was a special edition, which is very rare now, the extremely attractive brown 1220. Catalogue number was 208194LG.
I don't know the actual year of issue, another Model of the 1220 showed up in a set with four freight wagons. It was painted in red NS Cargo colours, which I believe to be wrong on this type of locomotive. The set number was 14 9920.
After their retirement a couple of engines were sold to private operator ACTS. Lima also made a model of this company in the late 1990's, some 35 years after the original apprearance of this loco. And, even more. Lima changed the moulds. It received a different front with double headlights. Nuber of the ACTS was 20 8212, numbered 1253 (no 1220 on the buffer beam anymore)
